Follow this to Rank Higher in Local Search Using Google’s Latest Updates
If you want more local leads in 2026, your Google Business Profile is no longer optional. It’s the second best option for local service visibility outside of your website.
Google just released new tools and playbooks that clearly show how businesses should optimize. On March 12th, an important article was released explaining how “Ask Maps” has added a fourth requirement for businesses that wish to rank locally. Most companies will ignore them and continue to use tried and true methods. That’s the opportunity and exactly why we highlight it in our foundation package for construction companies.
This guide breaks down exactly what matters and how to use it.
What Changed in Local SEO in 2026
Google is shifting from simple listings to understanding your business deeply based on interaction searches.
Key changes:
- Google defines your brand based on search behavior
- AI is interpreting your services from your posted content and uploaded images
- Messaging is replacing phone calls in some cases
- Reviews and summaries highly influence conversions instantly
If your profile and website don’t match what Google expects, you lose visibility. The ranking has changed and “Ask Maps” has become a huge differentiator. Think about it this way. Instead of someone typing into Google, “contractor near me”. They are searching, where can I find a contractor near me, who arrives on time, prices fairly and performs quality work. Now, it is more of a conversation than anything we have seen before. A way to get ahead of this change is to write and build content for these style of questions.
Step 1: Use Branded Search Data to Control Your Positioning
Inside Google Search Console, there’s now a Branded Queries filter. This is a free tool that is available to anyone. We set this up for our clients or if you have an administrative coordinator, we give you the needed instructions to set this up independently.
Branded Queries Filter Shows:
- What people are actually saying to search for your business
- Variations of your brand name and what prospects are referring to you as
- Service-based searches tied to your company and services
- Unexpected keyword associations, there are good to have on hand
How to use it:
- Build pages targeting those branded + service keywords
- Adjust homepage messaging to match search intent
- Reinforce your main services consistently and continue to think about conversational searches and how that will affect the content on your page
Example:
If Google associates your brand with “commercial construction in Charleston,” that should exist as a dedicated section by having a dedicated landing page. Each service should have dedicated service explanations for content and their exposure. This way when Google is looking for answers, based on the set up, you pop up before the competition.
Step 2: Optimize Your Google Business Profile Images
Most businesses upload photos. Very few optimize them as this feature is relatively new as well. In a website, you can add alt tags, however, this new Google Business Image Optimization is crucial for the enhancement of a local profile. This is a similar process with an extremely low barrier to entry as it is easy to preform.
What to do:
- Add short keyword-focused text on images before uploading
- Use clear descriptions of services and location
Example captions:
- “Image of roofer discussing the successful build in Charleston” – This is specific and targeted to the area
- “Group of contractors bidding a project in Charleston” – Again very specific instead of being a plain photo
Why this works:
Google uses images to understand your services.
More context = better rankings. This is such an incredible way to boost local listings and it is VERY easy to do this. Simply upload the image in Canva and add the text.
Step 3: Prepare for Messaging Over Calls
Google is testing messaging features directly in their search results. They have an entire team dedicated to retrieving the exact search results that consumers are now using. The variables occur when different people are discussing items in a different capacity, and using different search terms. Someone may be interested in the speed of the contractor, others may be more process driven, some might ask for positive reviews and specific explanations.
Industry leaders like Joy Hawkins and Miriam Ellis are already tracking this shift.
What this means:
- Customers expect fast responses
- Think about it. We all want faster results
- Fewer people will call
- We all expect to have information delivered to us instantly
- Conversion happens inside Google – This is where leads are kept or lost
What to do:
- Enable messaging where possible
- Respond quickly
- Treat every message like a lead
Step 4: Fix the Biggest Local SEO Mistake
Most websites and profiles are too generic. They all say the same thing, claim the same benefit and focus on similar messaging. That makes sense. This used to work well, before AI and AI searches jumped in a lot of websites and profiles could get away with having the same content. When you have a successful business people emulate it and rightfully so. There are only so many ways to say “general contractor near me” or “roofing repair near me”. The age-old saying comes to mind. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it or Why change what is working? If there is a successful construction company, you may look up to that business and consciously or unconsciously duplicate their offerings.
They say (and all say):
- “We offer high-quality services”
- “We serve the Charleston area”
That’s not enough context for today and especially with AI drafting the narrative. What makes a service high in quality? Is that speed of communication, quality work, volume of jobs booked? As the way we communicate with technology changes the terms and searches change with it.
You need:
- Specific service pages focused on what people are actually searching for
- Each city should have its own section
- Location-based keywords that are embedded and added EVERYWHERE
- Everywhere means everywhere: Images, Blogs, Website and GMB profile
- Clear positioning and clear outcomes
- If I call you, will I receive my required outcome
